the unbearable lightness of being

how quickly it rose, flowing upwards through tiny crevices we had created, swirling and filling that which contained it, my body, petite to the enormity of emotion

subconsciously fissures had already been made

love is like the present, adeptly sneaky

your tendencies open me despite the condition of endemic uncertainty

my love, wondrous and fragile, could break into something more beautiful given favorable circumstances, but those are not ours

intimacy falls prey to the transitory nature of social relationships,
the condition of an era of impermanence

we knew of the encroaching date of departure, we applied it at a state of departure,
each struggling with competing desires...
see one another as frames of reference for our actions, or
hide behind constructed dams of ambiguity, piecing together flip books filled with short-term affairs that animate into the kind of sequence to which contemporary concepts  could be meaningfully applied

eros chaperoned by thanatos.

stringing together words. your glasses removed.
moments when the glint of our mutual affection could not be refracted
creating arresting patterns and figurations, which this new lightness renders vunerable, evasive and fugitive

fragmented lives require flexibility, adaptability
to abandon fidelity and loyalties
to pursue opportunities according to their availability

so delicate the fissures
the rapture of creating a love affair on the fringe

a reflection on the love of looking

a synopticon menagerie, subtly arranged so that we may observe
and yet be observed

enclosed, in segmented space, single persons inserted into fixed position

into an apparatus that assures dissymmetry, disequilibrium, difference
it does not matter who, any inserted individual, can operate the machine

a marvellous machine which induces conscious and permanent visibility
immersed, watching others engaged in their own immersive acts
our attention arrested in perverse changing movements
subjection born mechanically from fictitious relations

the euphoria wanes
anxiety washes in,
irreversible we search for it still
dizzy and disoriented
we are left to operate the machine

Oh no, we got caught.  How are we going to get out of it?
Oh no, we got caught-up. Still, how are we going to get out of it?

cast in the shadow of the pleasure principle
we share our anxieties, our impulses, our burdens
we confess
perfecting perverse sexuality

we want to be perfect, good looking
practicing good looking

fitting seamlessly into the apparatus
any inserted individual can operate the machine

anxiety of belonging

we experience the world as composed of discrete, fragmented, and separable units

of time of place

forming social groups on abstractions

sex, race, corporations, nations, economic classes, religious

relations made through shared anxieties

(disclaimer)
not romanticizing notions of traditionality

seeking social relations

wildness emboldened
imagination  revered
desires clarified
love cultivated

aesthetic modernity: a spatially specific forgetfulness of being

human consciousness is simultaneously produced through the act of fabricating, sustaining, and inhabiting an environment.

the consequence of which alienates my consciousness.

nature made technical.

a temporary peculiarity of the essential human condition in false reconciliation,
in oscillation, between a struggle for personal development and a nostalgia for what is irretrievably lost.

the conditions of living, of being, arranged by socioeconomic processes.

underlying conflicts and discrepancies ignored.

"To be modern is to find ourselves in an environment that promises us adventure, power, joy, growth, transformation of ourselves and the world - and at the same time that threatens to destroy everything we have, everything we know, everything we are."

Marshall Berman, All That Is Solid Melts into Air.

the consequences of modernity

longing for a celestial body
unnatural light can trigger maladaptive behavior
disorient migrating birds
another casualty of light pollution
they find there way by moving away from the dark silhouettes, a behavior with which
artificial lights interfere
cued by moonlight, disoriented by desire.

strange modernity

...so detached we wonder
through an oblique conception
discontinuous with the past
through a process of social and cultural change, improvement, progress

life in the present is fundamentally different from life in the past
strange modernity dresses december
strange modernity that moves forward by going backward without acknowledgment.
